Agency urges motorists and commercial drivers to exercise caution as heavy rainfall worsens traffic conditions across state

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the rescue of 353 victims from road accidents and emergency incidents across Lagos between January and May 2026. General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this on Saturday, warning all road users to prioritise safety as the rainy season intensifies and increases risks on major roads.

According to Bakare-Oki, the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Unit attended to a range of incidents involving both private vehicles and commercial transport operators in various parts of the state. Of the victims rescued within the five-month period, 207 were adult males, 137 adult females, and nine male children. He noted that swift response by LASTMA officers ensured timely medical attention for those injured.

The agency said these figures highlight the dangers faced by Lagos residents during the wet season when reduced visibility, slippery roads, and flooded intersections often lead to higher rates of traffic accidents. With rainfall persisting across the South-West state, LASTMA has stepped up patrols along major highways and deployed additional emergency teams to blackspots known for frequent crashes.

Bakare-Oki called on motorists, commercial bus drivers, okada riders and other stakeholders to avoid speeding, ensure proper vehicle maintenance, and obey traffic signals at all times. He further advised parents to monitor children’s movement around busy roads and urged members of the public to use designated pedestrian crossings. “We want everyone in Lagos to arrive safely at their destinations, especially as adverse weather conditions continue,” he said in a statement.

LASTMA restated its commitment to reducing accident rates through continuous public sensitisation campaigns and rapid emergency intervention. The agency also appealed for cooperation from commuters while assuring that emergency hotlines remain active for prompt assistance during road incidents.

FG says initiative will boost local manufacturing, create new revenue streams for broadcasters and content creators

The Federal Government on Friday unveiled a free digital television platform at the NIGCOMSAT headquarters in Abuja, a move officials say will open new opportunities for job creation and expand Nigeria’s creative economy. The launch event was presided over by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who described the initiative as a major milestone in the country’s broadcast reform agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The ceremony brought together stakeholders from across Nigeria’s broadcast, communications, advertising, and regulatory sectors. Addressing participants, Idris said the fully implemented digital switch over ecosystem is expected to deliver wide-ranging economic benefits. He highlighted prospects for job creation, expansion of audience reach, growth in local content development, increased advertising opportunities and new revenue sources for both broadcasters and content creators.

“This reform is not just about technology but about empowering Nigerians through access to information and opportunities,” the minister said during his remarks at the launch. He added that the government hopes to see significant growth in local manufacturing linked to digital television infrastructure, as well as a strengthened media value chain across the country.

The launch comes at a time when Nigeria’s creative industry is seeking ways to leverage technology for economic diversification amid fluctuating global oil prices. Observers note that improved access to digital broadcasting can support small businesses in the entertainment sector and provide wider platforms for advertisers seeking to reach millions of viewers nationwide.

While specific targets or timelines were not announced at the event, officials reiterated government’s commitment to seeing the digital TV platform fully rolled out across all states. Stakeholders present expressed optimism that if implemented effectively, the initiative could position Nigeria as a leading hub for digital content production in West Africa.

ADC Chieftain Inuwa Warns Party Risks Losing Support Amid Katsina Governorship Dispute

Prolonged internal rift in Katsina ADC prompts warnings as members express frustration over unresolved leadership crisis

Prolonged internal rift in Katsina ADC prompts warnings as members express frustration over unresolved leadership crisis

A prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Inuwa, has raised alarm that the party is losing support among its members in Katsina State due to the unresolved dispute over its governorship ticket. Speaking on Sunday, 21 June 2026, Inuwa cautioned that continued infighting could seriously undermine the ADC’s presence ahead of the next election cycle.

The dispute, which centres on the legitimacy of the party’s governorship candidate in Katsina, has left many party members disillusioned. According to Inuwa, several supporters have already begun distancing themselves from ADC activities while others are threatening to decamp if the issue remains unresolved. “People are losing hope in ADC because of this lingering crisis,” Inuwa stated.

This internal strife comes at a time when opposition parties in Katsina and across the North-West are gearing up for a competitive political season. Analysts say that failure to resolve such disputes could weaken ADC’s ability to serve as a viable alternative to the dominant All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. The ADC had previously positioned itself as a platform for change but now faces credibility questions among its grassroots supporters.

Inuwa urged party leaders at both state and national levels to intervene swiftly and restore order. He called for dialogue among aggrieved stakeholders and appealed for unity, warning that “if nothing is done soon, ADC may become irrelevant in Katsina politics.” Other party members echoed these sentiments, expressing frustration with what they described as a lack of transparency in resolving leadership tussles.

As at press time, efforts were ongoing by some elders within the party to broker peace between the rival factions. Political observers say that how ADC handles this dispute could determine its future relevance not only in Katsina but also in other states facing similar challenges.
