Food enthusiasts and chefs in Port Harcourt have spotlighted Odu Fulo, a traditional seafood soup, as a symbol of Rivers State’s culinary identity, drawing attention to its deep roots in the coastal communities. The promotion comes amid efforts to preserve local food heritage and make the delicacy accessible to a wider audience.

Odu Fulo—also known as Guru Fulo—is celebrated for its rich blend of fresh fish, blue periwinkles (nsam), white periwinkles (ngolo), clams (ofingo), and fresh prawns, reflecting the abundance of seafood in the Niger Delta region. Traditionally associated with wealth and festive occasions, the soup has earned a reputation for being an expensive dish due to the high cost of premium seafood ingredients.

However, local chefs and food vendors say that Odu Fulo can be adapted without compromising its unique flavour. By reducing or substituting certain luxury items, households can prepare the soup on a modest budget. “The beauty of this recipe is that you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy it,” one chef explained during a cooking demonstration in Port Harcourt.

Rivers food advocates argue that promoting indigenous dishes like Odu Fulo is crucial for cultural preservation and tourism development in South-South Nigeria.
